Scott Barrow, Artist...
One of the hardest things for me to do is explain my work to someone who has
never seen it. I’m a music lover, and I listen to many kinds of music almost all
the time, but I can’t really define the music I listen to. There’s music I like, and
music I don’t like. I feel the same way about art...It’s not something you can
explain to much satisfaction. It’s better to define art by medium, and whether it
is abstract or not. Other than that, the rest is up to the viewer.
Having said that, if you think a skull can be a beautiful
object, but not necessarily a symbol of death or evil, my art may interest you. If you
believe that death and decay are a new beginning as much as they are an end, you might
find some meaning in my work beyond “dark and gloomy.” To go a step further, if you don’t
think spirituality has to be tied down by a set of beliefs or religion, you might relate to my
art. Existence itself is an incredible subject matter: consciousness, perception, “reality.” I
love toying with these ideas, both symbolically and literally.
As for me, I was born in Arizona. As far back as I can remember I liked drawing, mostly
dinosaurs, or trying to photo-realistically draw my model jets. My family moved to Florida
when I was twelve, which is when I discovered comic books. I met a group of kids who wrote and drew their own
comics, and I dove right in. That phase lasted through high school, and by that point I knew I would always be
involved with art. I moved to Orlando to study drawing, etching, and lithography at UCF. I’ve been living in
Orlando since, working as a cook to pay the bills while making and showing my art.
My current plans are to sell some prints while working on a new 100
days project. 100 new pictures in 100 days. Tenatively, I’ll be starting
in a couple weeks. Of course this could all backfire if I get swamped
with making prints, but that wouldn’t be a bad thing either--It’s a win-
win scenario, I like it! Once the new body of work is ready, it’ll be
showtime! Of course you can keep up with my progress right here at
FightingMediocrity.com!
Take care!
